LVD Directive

Electrical Safety and the Law

The LVD, or low voltage directive – 2014/35/EU applied to all electrical equipment powered from 50 to 1000Vac, or 75 – 1000V dc. The low Voltage Directive was originally introduced in 1973, this was then later modified by the CE marking directive under the ‘New Approach’ to allow the free movement of goods within the EU community.

Just like other directives, it was transposed into national law for all member states. LVD is not just for conformity, it’s there to protect your business.

How to comply?

The recommended approach to demonstrate compliance with LVD:

You will be required to apply the appropriate standard to your product, ensure the correct one is applied as any mistakes could be costly

  • EN60335-1 2010. Domestic appliances
  • EN62868-1 2014. Computers, business and office equipment.
  • EN61010-1 2010. Scientific and measuring instruments
  • EN60065 2002. Audio and Video equipment
  • EN60204-1 2006. Electrical Equipment of Machines

For a full list of up-to-date standards please read the official OJ

  • An assessment will be required using the appropriates standard to identify any safety tests that may be required to prove that the product conforms with the standard
  • The assessment shall be documented in a test report which shall contain product photographs, schematics, parts lists and mechanical drawings. This will form the LVD technical file, please store and retain in a safe place
  • Once all the technical assessments have been completed and documented, you have now met the requirements of the LVD directive and can make a declaration of conformity
  • All internal quality systems shall document and the CE mark applied to the product
